UN rights council condemns Islamic State for crimes against humanity

Geneva (dpa) - The Islamic State jihadist group has been singled out by the UN Human Rights Council for its role in alleged crimes against humanity in Syria.

The resolution "strongly condemns practices including abduction, hostage-taking, incommunicado detention, torture and killings carried out by non-state armed groups, most notably the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, and underlines that such acts may amount to crimes against humanity.
"However, the text mainly focuses on atrocities committed by the Syrian government, condemning it especially for its "indiscriminate attacks" against civilians.
