A Japanese man put himself on the balcony of Thaniya Plaza's fourth floor and jumped down at 10:40 pm Wednesday, police said. The man was identified as Shinji Watanabe, 37, from Yokohama.
Security guards put off the fire after he fell on the beer garden below. Rescuers failed to resuscitate him.
Witnesses told police that he was seen standing on the balcony for awhile before pouring petrol over himself and lit up the fire.
