Don't fear quake in South, says expert

A Prince of Songkla University's seismology expert urged Thai public not to panic over yesterday 5.3-magnitude earthquake, with its epicentre was in the sea off northern Sumatra. Its slight tremors could be felt in Phang Nga and Phuket provinces.

Paiboon Nuannin said this 7.02am quake wasn’t in the same area that caused the major quake that led to the December 26, 2004 tsunami. The public should not be worried about this latest incident which struck close to the devas?tating tsunami’s 10 year anniversary. “This quake is a normal phenomenon that took place once in a long while in northern Sumatra and it is not serious or worrisome,” he added.
