Five drug runners killed in Chiang Dao, big haul of 'yaba' seized

A clash between border patrol police and drug smugglers in Chiang Dao in the far northwest early Tuesday resulted to the death of five drug runners and the seizure of 420,000 methamphetamine pills, plus five pistols and one AK-47 rifle, Pol Col Peeyapan P

The pre-dawn clash took place in the wooded Thai-Myanmar border area in Ban Den Ya Kad in tambon Muang Na as a team from the 335th border patrol unit, led by Pol Lt Col Rattakorn Inthanin, spotted about 7-8 armed men carrying bags suspected to contain illegal drugs. They signalled for the armed men to stop for a search, but the men allegedly opened fire at the police instead, resulting in a 30-minute clash. Five bodies of suspects aged 17-36 were discovered later, along with the drugs.
