EU condemns misuse of Thai defamation laws

The European Union delegation to Thailand expressed concern over the increasing misuse of defamation laws on journalists and activists, an official confirmed yesterday.

Recent cases brought against journalists and activists have prompted the issue of this statement. Foreign and Thai journalists and at least one foreign activist have been penalised under the defamation laws for expressing criticism on public issues such as human trafficking and mistreatment of labourers.
The EU said use of defamation laws to stop criticism was a threat to freedom of expression and legitimate analysis and debate.
