Palm-oil farmers oppose import plans

Representatives of Palm Farmers Federation yesterday submitted a petition to Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha to oppose the government's plan to import 50,000 tonnes of palm oil, Chairit Taiyuan, president of Palm Farmers Association in Trang prov

The government should stop the import and check local stocks to see if the country is really facing a shortage of palm oil, he pointed out.
“If the government refuses to listen to the palm-oil producers, then the federation will consider the next move,” he said.
The price of palm oil from Malaysia is Bt30 per kilogram, while the local price is set at Bt34 per kg, which allows some interest groups to benefit from the difference.
The farmers want the government to stop importing palm oil and work out who gains and loses from this the most, he added.
