Mahidol-Japan deal to build high-tech medical robot

MAHIDOL University has teamed up with the Japanese government and its leading research institute to develop and run tests for a medical robot in a bid to build competent medical technology.

The cooperation was signed by Thailand Center of Excellence for Life Sciences (TCELS), Science and Technology Ministry, Mahidol University’s Faculty of Engineering, Japan’s Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry, Mitsubishi Research Institute and Panasonic Cooperation.
Under this collaboration, Japanese partners will provide the advanced technology and transfer knowledge for Thai developers to improve and develop the medical robots that meet commercial demands and |international standards, TCEL’s CEO Dr |Nares Damrongchai said.
Developing a medical robot that has advanced technology is apart of the ministry’s plan to enhance the scientific and technological infrastructure and a product that could service the world market, he added.
“We hope that this collaboration would help us to develop the medical robot with high technology and get acceptance from the international market,” he said.
Biomedical Engineering Department's chief Assistant Professor Jackrit Suthakorn said the Centre for Biomedical and Robotics Technology, operated under the department, had conducted research and developed a medical robot for over 10 years. Most robotic research and development has focused on a prototype robot and produced manpower for this medical field.
Moreover, the department has joined with TCELS to set up the high technology medical robotic operation unit to develop robotic products, to test and certify the quality of medical robots, as well as medical devices. This units aimed to get the research from the shelves and create a product for the commercial market.
