Moves a foot to require mobile phone users to register pre-paid SIM cards

The Royal Thai Police and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission yesterday signed an agreement to jointly enforce a new regulation requiring all mobile phone users to register their pre-paid SIM cards by July 31 or face not being able

Unregistered SIM cards by pre-paid users will be useless after the deadline, except for receiving calls and making emergency calls to national police and hospitals, police chief General Somyot Poompanmueng said.
This regulation will not be immediately enforced on IP-based video calls or calls through Internet-based applications, he said, adding that there were around 90 million pre-paid SIM cards not yet registered. The regulation has been issued by the NBTC as a way of deterring crime in general, including criminal defamation by netizens and social media users.
