Suspect denies any role in monk's murder

WIWET WICHAIYO, a former municipality chief in Loei province, yesterday testified to Udon Thani police over his alleged role in the March 1 murder of revered monk Phra Bundit Supanthito.

Assistant police chief Pol Lt-General Panya Mamen, who observed Wiwet’s testimony, later told reporters that police believed the murder weapon was either an M16 or an HK33 rifle.
As for allegations that Wiwet provided house-registration information of the slain monk to the owner of an Udon Thani private hospital, Panya said police would summon the hospital owner in a day or two to verify this claim. Police would also summon more witnesses next week to work out the motive.
Wiwet, who was released on bail after being charged with possessing firearms and ammunition, insisted that he had nothing to do with the murder and that he didn’t know the monk in person.
He also presented documents showing his work schedule on March 1 as well as a document proving that he has been working with the Internal Security Operations Command since 1987, to back the weapon possession.
As for the private-hospital owner, Wiwet said they had known each other for up to 30 years via civil service, but they never jointly invested in anything or owed each other any favours.
Police have marked the hospital owner as a person of interest.
