“We plan to evacuate Thais to safe places first before finally bringing them back to Thailand,” Foreign Minister General Tanasak Patimapragorn said yesterday.
He said other Asean nations would be asked to assist with the evacuations where possible.
In a statement on Sunday, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said two Thai students in Sanaa had expressed an intention to leave Yemen. The Thai Embassy in Oman, which has jurisdiction over Yemen, is contacting about 250 other Thai students in Yemen and advising them to move out of risky zones.
Warplanes struck the Yemeni capital Sanaa overnight and after daybreak yesterday, residents said, in the fifth day of a campaign by Saudi-led forces against Houthi forces opposed to Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, according to Reuters.
Tanasak said the Thai government had set up a centre at the ministry’s Department of Consular Affairs to help Thais living in Yemen. The centre is reachable by phone at (66) 2575 1047-8.
