Police found the ID card of Raman native Komarussaman Dengsamae, 25, at the scene, near a phone signal pole. The identity of the other man remains unknown.
After the explosion at 12.30am, Raman police, bomb squad and forensic police inspected the scene at the mouth of a rubber plantation on Kotabaru-Raman road in Tambon Kayubokoh and found pieces of human flesh, bomb fragments and clothes, suggesting at least two men were killed.
It is believed the men were trying to plant a home-made bomb to target soldiers on morning patrols. The flesh was submitted for a DNA test later yesterday.
Further investigation found at least three men in a red sedan brought the bomb – in a 15kg cooking cylinder – to the spot, but it went off accidentally, killing at least two suspects.
Southern Border Province Police Bureau chief Pol Lt- General Anurut Krissanakaraket said police were investigating if the explosion was linked to any separatist group.
