Soldier killed, another hurt, in Pattani roadside bomb

One soldier was killed and another slightly injured when a roadside bomb exploded yesterday in Pattani's Khok Pho district.

Insurgents also planted a pipe bomb two metres from the scene to target investigating officers, but it was discovered and defused.
Master Sergeant First Class Nipon Niyomchai, 55, sustained fatal injuries to his torso and both legs, and Corporal Apirak Khumkhuntod, 25, sustained a chest injury and tinnitus. Nipon later died from excessive bleeding.
The homemade bomb, placed in a 20kg cooking cylinder, exploded at 7.50am on the number 409 road (Khok Pho-Na Pradu) in tambon Na Pradu, while the six-strong Army patrol was passing on foot.
Police suspect the attack was carried out by insurgents to mark the 11th anniversary of the Krue Se Mosque incident.
Nipon’s bathing rite will be held at Wat Suwannakorn in Nong Chik district today. His remains will then be transported to his hometown in Nakhon Ratchasima later today.
