Only on Friday, the National Seismological Centre recorded five aftershocks , ranging between magnitude 4 and 5, with epicenters in Sindupalchok, Dolakha, Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts.
“Until Friday evening, the centre has recorded around 155 aftershocks of magnitude over 4," said Lokbijaya Joshi, the centre's chief. He added that the aftershocks of decreasing intensity and frequency were normal occurrence after major earthquake .
Seismologists say the chances of higher magnitude earthquake striking the same place in the immediate aftermath of the mainshock are very low, though it is uncertain how long the aftershocks are going to last.
“They might occur in the region close to the epicentre of the mainshock for days even years,” Joshi said."People should remain cautious but there is no reason to be terrified.”
Normally, earthquake s and following aftershocks measuring between 4 and 6 in magnitude are less likely to cause casualties or property damage unless the houses are already vulnerable or poorly built.
