Appeals Court jails 65-year-old woman for insulting King

The Court of Appeals yesterday overturned the suspended jail term handed down by the Criminal Court and sentenced a 65-year-old woman to a year in jail for showing disrespect to a portrait of His Majesty.

The Appeals Court ruled that Titinan Kaewchan could not be considered completely insane and was in control of herself when she acted disrespectfully in front of the King’s portrait at the Government Complex on Ratchada Road in 2012.
In May last year, the primary court sentenced her to a year in jail but suspended it so she could take treatment for her mental problems. However, the verdict was overturned when public prosecutors appealed against the suspended sentence.
Titinan did not show any emotion when she heard the ruling yesterday.
