Finance to double farmland insurance size

Finance Minister Sommai Phasee said Friday that the government's insurance scheme to rice farmers would cover 3 million rai in 2016.
The scheme covers 1.5 million rai this year.
The finance minister said that if more farmers join the scheme, the insurance premium could be reduced. Meanwhile, the compensation could also rise above Bt1,111 paid out per rai in this year.
"2015 is the start of the scheme. I'd like to urge more farmers to join this scheme, as this would assure protection against drought and others. Next year, we will try to cover 3 million rai of farm land," he said.
