Civil Aviation Department to be restructured

The Cabinet has given the green light for the restructuring of the Civil Aviation Department, which would see two new organisations replacing the department, Transport Minister Prajin Juntong said on Wednesday.

The new agencies would be the National Civil Aviation Institute and the Airport Department. The institute would act as an independent regulator while the latter would be responsible for airport management.

The decision was made in line with the absolute power provided by the Article 44 of the 2014 interim constitution and used by Prime Minister Prayut Chanocha as chief of the National Council for Peace and Order. The article empowers Prayut to expedite the restructuring of the Civil Aviation Department.
The restructuring is aimed at improving the department's management after its failure to meet international aviation standards led to the ban on Thairegistered airlines’s chartered flights by Japan. Prajin said the restructuring would be finished within June.
