Record-high Monthong durian price on Chinese demand

Monthong durian price has hit a record high at Bt90-Bt120 per kg, due to lower output as well as increasing demand from China, according to a report by the Commerce Ministry.

It said that tropical storms in Chanthaburi, Rayong and Trat near harvest time have damaged several durian orchards. Meanwhile, demand from China has risen. Several Chinese traders directly contacted orchard owners for the fruit.
"Chinese traders this year competed against Thais in bidding for the fruit. Purchased goods are packed in the cases destined directly to China. There are pros and cons. What's good is Thai farmers are winning large orders. Yet, there is a possibility that China may dominate Thai fruit trade and prices," the report said.
Monthong - golden pillow in Thai - is the most popular durian species in Thailand.
