The National League for Democracy will decide whether it will participate in the 2015 election at its upcoming central executive committee meeting, which will be held in Nay Pyi Taw within the next few days, according to committee member Tun Tun Hein.

NLD leaders initially said they would only decide to participate in the election if it was confirmed to take place. On July 8, the Union Election Commission announced that the election will be held on November 8.

Tun Tun Hein said: “We will discuss the election in the upcoming CEC meeting. We will try to hold the meeting as soon as possible. Most CEC members will meet on July 11. The meeting will be in Nay Pyi Taw. There are nine CEC members in Nay Pyi Taw. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will attend the meeting.”
He continued: “Now that the election date has been announced, we have to announce whether we are going to compete or not. We have already prepared for the election by campaigning. The candidate lists will be chosen only after we have decided if we will compete or not.”

At a CEC meeting on June 20, Aung San Suu Kyi said every NLD candidate must be transparent about their wealth and possessions. She said that candidates must serve for the sake of the country, not their families or personal interests.

Suu Kyi advised the public and NLD members to be wary of irregularities in the election.
“This year is an important year for the country. It was ruined in 1990, when the people tried to decide their future on their own. Now, we should all be united in order to prevent what happened in 1990 from happening again,” she said.

The NLD is expected to win by a landslide in the upcoming election. The central campaign team for the election was formed on February 9.

The Karen National Party, Zomi Democracy Congress, and Shan National League for Democracy also previously announced they would decide whether they would compete once the election date was set and are expected to announce their decisions soon.
