Thai couple arrested for duping workers in 2006

POLICE yesterday announced the arrest of a Thai couple, who allegedly duped others with promises of well-paid jobs in Taiwan before fleeing with the workers' fees in 2006.

City police senior investigator Pol Maj-General Sombat Milinthajinda told a press conference that Thanawat Nareusuksawat, 54, and wife Thanit, 51, for whom Phitsanulok court had issued arrest warrants for fraud, were arrested at a gas station in Bangkok’s Huai Kwang district. The couple had worked as job agents for a private company in Phitsanulok, Sukhothai, Uttaradit and Phichit provinces seeking staff to work in Taiwan. The company charged each worker Bt70,000 to Bt80,000 as a processing fee and paid the agent Bt10,000 from that amount as commission.
The company collapsed in 2005, but the couple continued to claim that they could take people to work in Taiwan, hence many victims paid them Bt3.15 million in total, Sombat said.
The investigation found there were 99 similar warrants for fraud (37 for Thanawat, 62 for Thanit) against the couple. Thanawat has reportedly confessed to the fraud.
