Drummers herald Narong's return to work

NARONG SAHAMETHAPAT retur-ned to work at the Public Health Ministry yesterday as permanent secretary after Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on Tuesday ordered his immediate reinstatement.

As a troupe of traditional drummers and dancers heralded his return, Narong urged officials at the ministry to transcend personal conflicts.
Five months ago, Narong was transferred to the PM’s Office Ministry because Public Health Minister Rachata Rachatanavin accused him of failing to implement the government’s policies. A fact-finding panel has since probed his alleged improper conduct and found that the allegation was unwarranted.
Narong thanked Prayut for restoring pride to him, his family and his fellow officials, not just at the ministry, but all government officials. He called for the reinstatement of all officials who were transferred or sacked for misconduct and later found to be innocent.
The permanent secretary said Prayut wants to see the Public Health Ministry move forward with unity. Narong has only two months left before his retirement but he plans to make a push in four areas, including overcoming factionalism and personal feuds, designating health zones and hiring more staff in areas where officials are understaffed.
Narong paid respect to a Buddha statue at his office and other sacred sites within the ministry as public health officials shouted out to welcome his return. He also reported to Rachata, who spoke briefly and told him to continue working.
