NRC member attacks charter draft

Wanchai Sornsiri, a member of the National Reform Council, announced today that he would vote against the draft Constitution, saying parts of the draft could lead to a crisis.

He said that the draft failed to solve the country's problems and blocked further reforms.
He attacked four main points including the lack of mechanism to ensure the election that is fair and free from vote buying. He also questioned the effectiveness of the anti-corruption mechanism.
He foresaw future political impasses following the inclusion of non-elected MPs and senators.
He also attacked the proposed reform strategic committee, citing that despite good intentions this could lead to another crisis.
"If I were the NCPO (National Centre for Peace and Order), I would not agree with this proposal. NCPO is now in power, but that power could wither away then. The drafting committee apparently included this part to please NCPO and urge it to further perform the reform and reconciliation task. If we thorough consider it, this could bring disappointment to NCPO in the future," Wanchai said.
NRC will vote on the draft on September 6.
