"In accordance with our committment to solidarity, the club has decided to help the men, women and children who have been forced to abandon their homes to escape civil war and death," the club said in a statement.
It followed a promise made Friday by Real president Florentino Perez,in a telephone conversation with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who said that Spain will take in "its fair share of refugees... We will not deny the right of asylum to anyone."
Real are the first club in Spain to confirm their help for refugees, and others are expected to follow suit quickly. In particular, there is a strong campaign in the Catalan media for European champions Barcelona to follow Real's example.
