Malaysian in court over Islamic State symbol on smartphone

Kuala Lumpur (dpa) - A Malaysian man found to have an Islamic State symbol on his smartphone was charged Tuesday and could face up to seven years in prison, an official said.

The 26-year-old entered no plea to the charge of possessing an outlawed image, deputy public prosecutor Nadia Mohamad Izhar said.
Police found the image on Zakariya Ahmad's phone when he was questioned on suspicion of involvement with Islamic State supporters in Malaysia on August 19, Nadia said.
Kuala Lumpur Magistrates court Judge Erry Shahriman Nor Aripin denied bail and set the start of the trial for October 30.Nearly 100 Malaysian citizens have gone to Syria and Iraq to fight alongside the radical Islamist movement, according to police.
Dozens of Malaysians have been charged since last year for supporting the militants.
