Thai cartoonist summoned by military junta

Thai Rath newspaper's cartoonist Sukda Sae-Iew, who works under the pen name Sia, reported to the National Council for Peace and Order, was summoned by the National Centre for Peace and Order (NCPO) on Sunday.

After the meeting with NCPO officials, he said he was informed that some information contained in his editorial cartoons was wrong. He was not threatened, he said, but the officials said he would face legal lawsuits if his new cartoons still contain wrong information. The cartoonist said that he would be more careful.

"They said it's impossible to change one's attitude but it depends on how we can cooperate. They said if my new cartoons cause damage, I should be prepared for lawsuits. I may need to reduce my contribution as this may affect the organisation. It would have been alright if this affected me only," he told reporters.

The conversation covered a cartoon showing that Thailand paid more than Malaysia for a train carriage. Sukda explained that the information came from news reports and he drew the cartoon out of patriotism.
