Rights group concerned over impartiality of Myanmar election body

Yangon (dpa) - Human Rights Watch on Friday expressed "fundamental concerns over the impartiality" of the Myanmar election commission ahead of Sunday's historic election.

The Union Election Commission (UEC) have close ties with the army-backed Union Solidary and Development Party, with UEC chairman UTin Aye a former party member, said Phil Robertson, Deputy Director of HRW's Asia Division.
"We're concerned that complaints filed by the National League for Democracy and other groups against the USDP will be ignored," Robertson said.
The National League for Democracy (NLD) are the opposition party led by Nobel Peace Prize recipient Aung San Suu Kyi.
Suu Kyi stated on Thursday that her party has filed several complaints over the conduct of the USDP during campaigning.
The UEC has neither commented nor acted against the USDP on the complaints.
