'Lift ban on party meetings'

DEMOCRAT Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva has written to the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) asking it to scrap the ban on political party meetings so they can make decisions to solve internal problems, a senior party figure said yesterday.

Ong-art Klampaiboon, deputy Democrat leader, said Abhisit was not specifically asking the NCPO for permission to hold a party meeting.
The Democrats have reportedly sought to convene a meeting to discuss an alleged irregularity involving the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, led by Governor MR Sukhum-bhand Paribatra. He contested the gubernatorial election under the Democrat banner.
Ong-art said yesterday his party has to resolve this matter involving Sukhumbhand because they were responsible to their electorate. “We don’t have any personal problems with him,” he added.
Meanwhile, Deputy PM and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwan said yesterday that the NCPO would decide whether to allow political parties to meet, though he added that certain parties have been meeting secretly anyway.
