Investigators ‘not threatened’, police chief claims

There is no evidence investigators probing human trafficking in the |South have been threatened like the former head of the investigation claimed he was, the national police chief has said.

A police investigative committee had interviewed up to 60 officers who were on ex-Pol Maj-General Paween Pongsirin’s team, while about two dozen still had to be interviewed, General Chakthip Chaijinda said.
Chakthip said his assistant, |Lt-General Srivara Rangsibrahmanakul, was overseeing the investigation |and would provide further details later.
Paween quit the police force last month and is now seeking protection in Australia.
He has told Australian media that he fled Thailand, as he feared for his life because influential figures implicated in the illicit trade wanted him dead and were likely to be able to kill him if he was forced to work in the far South.
