Ubon Ratchathani officials yesterday came to the aid of an elderly couple in Sirindhorn district after their son was forced into hard labour on a fishing boat in Indonesia 16 years ago.

After verifying that 36-year-old Rung Luansri was a human-trafficking victim who had fled to Tuan Island since 2000, Ubon Ratchathani social development and human security official Laksaneeya Sriwattanachai told his parents Wandee, 75, and Thongyoo, 71, that the government would bring him home along with his family members there.
She quoted Rung as saying that he went to work for a fishing boat company in Malaysia in 2000 via a middleman but was forced into hard labour without pay, hence he and other workers fled to Tuan Island, where he also endured difficult life conditions.
Tambon Noen Kor Administrative Organisation president Boontaeng Boriboon revealed that her office would have Wandee, who was blind in one eye, register for a disability allowance and provide scholarships to his three orphaned grandchildren in a bid to help the family.
