Authorities warn of rise in drowning cases among children

Children under the age of 15 are most at risk of drowning, with as many as one reported in every eight hours, while 250 such deaths were reported during summer last year.

Peerapong Saichua, permanent secretary of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), said half of the drowning cases happened at natural water sources, followed by swimming pools and bathtubs.
He said that in order to avoid this, parents should teach children how to swim and keep a close eye on them, especially during the “most risky” period between noon and evening. He also said lids or fences will be installed as well as warning signs be put up at different water sources.
