Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has asked that state offices and members of the public turn off unnecessary lights for one hour a day from 2pm to 3pm for a month-long period lasting March 20 to May 20.

During the recent National Energy Policy Committee meeting, Prayut urged co-operation in curbing peak electricity demand this summer, said Energy Minister Anantaporn Kanjanarat. This year’s peak is forecast to be around 29,018 megawatts, based on the economic growth projection of 2.7 to 2.8 per cent.
Other measures suggested for energy conservation included the setting of air-conditioners to 26 degrees Celsius and shifting the mode from “cool” to “fan”, urging people to unplug unused electrical appliances, advocating energy-saving electrical products to consumers, and the promotion of electrical vehicles (EV), in line with Thailand’s goal of having 1.2 million EVs on the streets and up to 1,000 EV service stations by 2036.
