The Irrigation Department yesterday dismissed speculation that it was considering using so-called “dead storage”

Spokesman for the Royal Irrigation Department Thongplew Kongchan said the department had conducted a feasibility study on dead storage but said that the current water-use plan for the dams, including the Bhumibhol and Sirikit barriers, was efficient enough for the seasonal demands without having to draw water normally stored at the bottom of the dams for structural stability.
By the close of the dry season at the end of April, there would be around 1,600 million cubic metres of water left in the four dams, and this would be sufficient to serve the needs of consumers and the environment until July, Thongplew said.
