Over 50 per cent of voters ‘to take part in referendum’

MORE THAN half of people surveyed by Bangkok Poll said recently they would exercise their right to cast a ballots in the referendum on whether to accept or reject the charter draft.

Of 1,198 people surveyed from across the country, about 58 per cent said they would be voting and about 19 per cent said they would stay away, while about 22 per cent said they were not certain.
Asked whether they would accept the charter draft, 34.5 per cent said yes (a 10-per-cent drop from the previous survey), 8 per cent said they would reject the draft (a drop of 8 per cent), 21 per cent said they would abstain (a drop of 6.9 per cent) and 36.5 per cent said they were not sure (an increase of 25.5 per cent.)
Asked what solution was best if the charter draft does not pass the referendum, 33 per cent preferred the 2014 charter of the National Council for Peace and Order, 18.4 per cent said adopt the 1997 charter; 17 per cent wanted to adopt the 2007 charter; and 31 per cent said they were not sure.
Around 77 per cent agreed with a training course for politicians, the media and members of the public on good governance, ethics and morality, 14 per cent said they did not agree with the plan.
About 56 per cent said they did not know that the charter draft was completed, 43 per cent said they knew.
Asked if they would read the draft, 75 per cent said yes, 39 per cent of these people said they would use self-study, 35 per cent said they would listen to academics and politicians who discuss the advantages and drawbacks of the draft, 10 per cent said they would not study because they think the draft is written well, 14 per cent said they were not sure.
Meanwhile, Dusit Poll results released yesterday showed that 55 per cent of people surveyed were ready to cast ballots in the referendum, as it could bring about political changes and a general election would be held soon. About 44 per cent said they had not yet decided, adding there was not enough information to make a decision.
Asked what they liked the most in the charter draft, 81 per cent backed the anti-graft measures, 66 per cent said the draft was written in public interest, stressing equality, 60 per cent said the draft was relevant in the current country’s situation.
