Chiang Mai police defends acts

Chiang Mai Traffic Police insisted that it appropriately fined a foreign tourist on April 12 for wearing no shirt while celebrating Songkran festival.

He was fined for Bt100.
Pol Colonel Piyapan Pattarapongsin, superintendent of the Chiang Mai Traffic Police, said at a press conference today that the city made it clear that traditional Songkran celebrations would be in focus this year when the city celebrates the 720th anniversary. This message was well circulated at Chiang Mai International Airport and other venues, he noted. Meanwhile, the fine was very small.
He also insisted that the city's traffic police equally treated local and foreign revellers.
