Thieves break into bank’s strong room, steal Bt10 million

An unknown number of thieves broke into a strong room of a Bangkok Bank branch in Phetchaburi’s Cha-am district and made off with about Bt10 million or Bt11 million in cash, police said.

The bank knew about the theft only in the morning when its staffs started working after a long weekend. They found that a deposit box in the strong room had been cut open apparently with gas cutter and all the cash had gone.
An officer at the Cha-am police station said the alarm from the bank was alerted at the station at 2:30 am briefly but when police rushed to the bank they did not see any irregularity from the outside.
The thieves apparently cut off the alarm system quickly after they broke in from the rooftop through the ceiling.
Attaphol Samakratthakij, manager of the Hua Hin branch of Bangkok Bank who supervises the Bangkok Bank branches in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Phetchaburi, said the Cha-am branch normally transferred its cash to the head office after office hours each day but it failed to had the cash delivered before the long weekend.
The stolen cash included foreign currencies as the bank served as a main foreign exchange centre in the tourist-destination district, Attaphol said.
