Five Thai GROs and their boss held in raid

SUNGAI PETANI - Five Thai women were nabbed in an immigration raid at an entertainment outlet in Taman Pekan Baru here.

A 45-year-old local man who is believed to be their employer was also arrested in the raid at 1.10am yesterday.

Kedah Immigration Department enforcement chief senior deputy director Mohd Shahrir Khalil said the women, aged between 21 and 45, were detained for misusing their social visit pass and the local man for harbouring foreigners who had committed immigration offences.

The department’s principal deputy assistant director Wan Fatonatunnor Abdul Rahim, who led the raid, said the women were believed to be working as guest relations officers at the outlet.

“They had come into the country regularly and were believed to have been working at the premises for about three months,” he said.

He said the women were busy entertaining customers during the raid and a few of them tried to escape by hiding behind doors and inside the toilets.

The Thai women were sent to the state immigration lockup in Anak Bukit for further investigation after which were expected to be transferred to the Belantik Immigration Detention Depot in Sik.
