20% of migrants who did health checks in Tak had TB

About a fifth of migrant workers who registered at Tak’s one-stop service centre for labour office and underwent a health check were found to have tuberculosis.

The National Legislative Assembly’s committee on commerce, industries and labour discovered the disturbing news while inspecting the centre. Records there show 500 registered migrant workers have undergone health checks. Of them, 100 tested positive to tuberculosis and needed treatment.
“This means about 20 per cent of the migrant workers [who underwent these health checks] have carried this communicable disease,” the committee’s chairman Singsuk Singpai said yesterday. “It’s quite a big issue.”
He said he planned to raise the issue with the Public Health Ministry and the Labour Ministry.
About 18,000 migrant workers have registered at the Tak centre so far. But only 500 appear to have undergone health checks.
In response to government policy, one-stop service centres have sprung into operation across the country to register Myanmar, Laotian and Cambodian workers.
Registrations started on April 1 and end on July 29.
