YANGON - A court martial has reportedly jailed seven soldiers to five years with hard labour for killing five villagers during clashes with the Ta'aung National Liberation Army (TNLA).

A military source said the court martial was established on August 8 and questioned the seven suspects, a police inspector and 18 Mongyaw villagers.

On July 2 the military-owned Myawady Daily reported that troops patrolling near Mongyaw village, Lashio Township, north Shan State, onJune 25 clashed with the TNLA. Five Mongyaw villagers died in the fighting.

On July 20, Lieutenant General Mya Tun Oo told the press that the incident would be investigated.

He said a brigadier general was leading the investigation in accord with military law, regardless of whether the dead were villagers or insurgents.
