BMA operations begin to catch water monitor lizards

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) on Tuesday morning started catching water monitor lizards at the downtown Lumpini Park. The reptiles would be sent to Ratchaburi's Khao Son Wildlife Nursery Station, which has a 1,000-rai natural station and

Suwanna Jungrungrueng, director-general of the BMA's Environment Department, led 12 officials in the operation aimed at catching 40 water monitor lizards yesterday.

An army of journalists from TV and newspapers, as well as concerned onlookers, observed the activity.

BMA workers, each armed with a long stick with a noose at the end and plenty of catfish as bait, managed to catch 17 water monitor lizards, each weighing at least 10 kilograms, in the morning itself.

BMA had previously sent a total of 87 water monitor lizards to the Ratchaburi station on two occasions.
