"The four affected wings in disturbances at HMP Birmingham have now been recovered and secured," the operator G4S wrote on Twitter.
One prisoner suffered a broken jaw and eye-socket during the riot, G4S added.
The incident involved more than 300 prisoners and there were no reports of staff injuries, the prison officers' union POA said.
West Midlands Police said earlier that keys to residential areas were taken from an officer and offenders occupied some blocks and exercise facilities.
Prison staff blocked off the affected parts of the prison and moved to a safe place.
The cause of the riot and the extent of the damage to the buildingwere unclear.
The prison, located in the centre of Birmingham, is one of Britain's oldest and houses 1,450 inmates.
