19 months required for preparing election after new charter takes effect: Wissanu

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam Friday hinted it could take 19 months after the new Constitution promulgated before the next election would be held.

He said the road map for the next general election would start to count after the new Constitution is promulgated. The draft charter was submitted for royal endorsement in early November and His Majesty the King has 90 days to decide whether to endorse it.
Explaining the timeframe of the road map, Wissanu said after the new charter comes into effect, the Constitution Drafting Commission would have 240 days or eight months to finish four draft organic laws and submit them to the National Legislative Assembly (NLA).
The NLA then will have 60 days or two months to deliberate the four bills and this period could be extended by 30 more days in case of revision, he said.
After the draft organic laws are passed, it would take 90 days or three months to wait for His Majesty the King’s royal endorsement, he added.
After the royal endorsement for the organic laws, the country would go into the election mode, which would take no more than 150 days or five months, he said.
