Compensation call for families of teachers killed in South

The president of the teachers’ federation in Pattani province called on the government to mark National Teacher’s Day on Monday by agreeing to pay Bt4 million compensation to each family which has lost a teacher loved one because of insurgency-related violence in the country’s deep South.

“The teachers’ problems in the three southernmost provinces are different to those of their colleagues in other regions. Since 2003, the number of teachers and education officials who have fallen victim to the insurgency violence is 182,” said Boonsom Thongsriplai.
“The most violent period was between 2005 and 2007, in which 26 to 27 teachers died each year. The situation has improved in recent years, with the death toll reducing to only one in 2016. That showed the government has given more importance to the security and safety measures in the area, which made our teachers feel safe more.
“However, we’ve always asked for benefits for teachers, especially those who lost their lives. We want them [their families] to receive Bt4 million compensation. This year, we want see something concrete in regards to our request.”
