Panel starts amending draft charter

The special panel to amend the constitution draft kicked start working Wednesday and the amendment is expected to be done in a week, Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said Tuesday.

The panel, chaired by Meechai Ruchupan chief of Constitution Drafting Commission, convened for the first time at the Office of Council of State after the Office of the His Majesty’s Principal Private Secretary had handed down observation on the draft charter needing amendment.

Wissanu, who sits also in the declined to disclose the exact observations passed from the royal office but said the amending should be done in a week so that other procedures could be pursued.

He said the panel might come up with several writings for the Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to choose from.

Wissanu repeated that other articles related to political affairs would not be touched, but any points related to the monarch’s power could be adjusted to align with the new amendment.

Countering the speculation that other political points might be altered given the members of the special panels were experts of varied political fields, Wissanu said the members were appointed because they were members of the Council of State.

He said the panel would not vote to decide on the amendment despite the odd number of members 11.
