New Hua Lamphong measure aims to keep out homeless people

New Hua Lamphong measure aims to keep out homeless people

In an attempt to prevent homeless people from sleeping at night inside the Hua Lamphong Railway Station, the State Railway Authority (SRT) this week strictly enforced an order to close the railway hub located in Pathumwan district for three and a half hours.

The station will be closed from 11.30pm to 3am every day after the last night train departs Hua Lamphong.
The joint efforts by the SRT and the Ministry of Social Welfare and Human Security is aimed at tackling the problem of homeless people and beggars using the railway station to stay overnight. It is also aims to elevate the standard of the station to international level.
Passengers waiting to catch predawn trains must register at a counter in front of the station with their ID cards. After registration, the passengers will be allowed to wait outside on the footpath in front of the station.
Railway police will be deployed 24 hours to ensure security.

The move has caused resentment among some passengers who were unaware of the new measure, as well as homeless people who regularly used the place to sleep at night. Some passengers, who were not allowed to enter the station after 11.30pm, posted on social media crying foul over the measure.
