Khon performances to be staged at King Rama IX’s royal cremation ceremony

Preparations are underway for Khon performances at the royal cremation ceremony of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej. The Foundation of the Promotion of Supplementary Occupations and Related Techniques of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit of Thailand (SUPPORT) and Bunditphatthanasilpa Institute are currently working on the traditional Thai dance form.

Surat Jongda, assistant to the Bunditphatthanasilpa Institute president, said on Sunday that HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn had ordered SUPPORT and Bunditphatthanasilpa Institute to organise royal Khon performances on two stages at King Rama IX’s royal cremation, with performances scheduled to continue until dawn, Thai National News Bureau reported.
He said the royal Khon performances will be directed by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit’s Private Secretary, Jarungjit Theechara, and will include up to 300 performers.
Costumes and props for the royal Khon performances are expected to be ready by September. All performers will rehearse together at the Salaya College of Dramatic Arts.
