Only 38% of more than 700 patients qualified for free treatment

More than 700 people tried to exercise their right to free emergency medicine during the seven dangerous days associated with the 2017 Songkran Festival, according to the National Institute for Emergency Medicine (NIEM).

Of them, about 38 per cent were judged as eligible for the services.
NIEM secretary general Atchariya Pangma said on Tuesday that 1,773 patients have requested care under the new policy that was launched at the beginning of this month. Under the scheme serious emergency patients can receive free treatment at public and private hospitals for the first 72 hours of care.
“But overall, just 40.33 per cent were qualified,” he said.
Atchariya explained that only patients in serious emergencies could take advantage of the free treatment.
“For example, patients must have difficulty breathing or have experienced incessant seizures,” he said.
