Interim SRT Governor Anont Luangboriboon explained that Cabinet saw fit to extend the free train-ride programme beyond its original end date of April 30.
The service will now be available until October 31 of this year.
Under the programme, the SRT has 160 free trains a day. Most of these – 152 –are public services such as inter-city travel or local travel, while the rest are for commercial purposes. The commercial rides are only on third-class carriages and are seat-specific.
Tickets for the free rides are not seat-reserved or may be standing only, but they include trips from Bangkok to as far as Chiang Mai and Sungai Kolok, in the far South.
People seeking free rides must present their national ID card and travel on the day their ticket is issued.
Information on the service can be found by calling 1690 24-hours a day or at all train stations.
