King presides at auspicious ploughing ceremony

Divine auguries from Friday morning’s royal ploughing ceremony at which His Majesty the King presided indicated there would be ample but not excessive rain for crops this year and plenty of food for all.

Agriculture Ministry permanent secretary Thirapat Prayoonsit served as “lord” of the ancient ritual replicated annually at Sanam Luang in Bangkok.
Thirapat prayed for divine assistance before selecting a five-piece set of traditional clothing from a tray. His selection was interpreted to mean there would be enough water to nurture the crops this year, but no floods, and an abundant rice harvest.
Two royal cattle were then presented with an array of different foods and chose to eat the rice and corn, which according to tradition also forecasts sufficient water for agriculture and enough food to feed everyone in the country.
