Canadian found dead in Bangkok police custody was admin of world’s biggest Dark Web marketplace

A Canadian man who was found hanged in a cell at the Narcotics Suppression Bureau headquarters in Bangkok was the admin the world’s largest marketplace on the Dark Web, it has been claimed.

The body of Alexander Cazes, 26, was discovered in his cell on Wednesday. The officer who found his body noticed a towel hanging from the toilet door and police recorded his death as suicide.

The body was found just hours before Cazes was due to attend a deportation hearing.

Pol Maj Gen Chayapoj Hasunha head of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau’s intelligence division described Cazes as a “computer programmer” and said he lived with his Thai wife in a house in Bangkok.

Pol Maj Gen Chayapoj also revealed that Cazes was arrested on July 5 at the request of the US authorities.

Cazes reportedly lived a life of luxury during the 8 years he spent in Thailand.

Following his arrested police impounded no less than four Lamborghini sports cars all registered in his name. He was named on the deeds for three properties in Thailand, valued almost Bt400 million in value.

Numerous reports now claim that Cazes was the admin or heavily involved in running AlphaBay, a Dark Web marketplace used to buy and sell illegal items such as drugs and firearms.

It had been dubbed “the new Silk Road”, and was typically only accessible via special software or secret domains.

AlphaBay mysteriously went offline around the same time Cazes was arrested.

The Wall Street Journal now reports that the arrest of Cazes was part of a global operation involving authorities in the United States, Canada and Thailand.

The Montreal Gazette reports that the raids were carried out as “part of a larger, international investigation involving the FBI and other agencies” into the sale of illegal goods online.

A thread on Reddit claimed Cazes was actually DeSnake one of the admins of Alpha Bay.

People speculating online claimed Cazes killed himself to avoid being extradited to the United States.

It is not known if the raids resulted in the seizure of computers which hosted AlphaBay and if Cazes shared any information about the site to the authorities prior to his death
