Bangkok’s empty spaces give mosquitoes room to breed

More than 18 per cent of Bangkok’s total area remain unutilised and a possible ground for mosquito breeding.

Asst Prof Dr Niramon Kulsrisombat, who heads the Chulalongkorn University’s Urban Design and Development Centre, disclosed this week that a survey showed about 184,200 rai in the capital was not used and without proper care, it could be grounds for mosquito breeding.

Mosquitoes can spread several diseases, including dengue fever and Zika virus.

Assoc. Prof. Panit Pujinda, a lecturer at the university’s Faculty of Architecture, says Zika virus had infected 60 Bangkok residents this year. Bang Na and Suan Luang districts are the ones with the highest infections.

This is on top of frequent reports on dengue cases in the capital.
