Loy Krathong is one of the most famous festivals celebrated nationwide in Thailand.
As the full moon casts its light over the land, the rivers, lakes and canals come alive with bursts of light as lotus-inspired floats, known as krathong, fashioned from banana leaves and adorned with colourful blossoms and candles, are sent out onto rivers and ponds.
By tradition, it is an act of apology to the goddess of the rivers for our misdeeds and to ask for good luck in the coming year.
Chulalongkorn University students float eco-friendly flower candles in the university’s pond Friday night. For this year, Chulalongkorn’s Loy Krathong festival comes up with a theme “Love is all around” to raise awareness not only on magnificent Thai culture but also on preserving the environment (courtesy of Anant Chantarasoot).
